Epidural Steroid Injection
What Is an Epidural Steroid Injection?
An epidural steroid injection involves the placement of a corticosteroid (a potent anti-inflammatory medication) and a local anesthetic into the epidural space, the area surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots. The goal is to reduce inflammation and swelling around the irritated nerves, which in turn relieves pain, numbness, and tingling sensations that often radiate from the spine into the limbs.
The procedure is typically performed under fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray guidance) to ensure accuracy and safety. A contrast dye is used to confirm correct placement of the needle before the medication is injected. ESIs can be performed in the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (lower back) regions, depending on the location of the pain.
Conditions Treated with Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections are commonly used to treat a variety of spine-related conditions, including:
- Herniated disc – When a spinal disc bulges or ruptures, it can compress nearby nerves, causing pain and inflammation.
- Spinal stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal can place pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, leading to chronic pain.
- Degenerative disc disease – Age-related wear and tear can irritate spinal nerves and cause ongoing discomfort.
- Sciatica – Inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve can cause pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg.
- Radiculopathy – Pain resulting from nerve root irritation in the cervical or lumbar spine.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients lie on an exam table, and the skin at the injection site is cleaned and numbed. Using fluoroscopic guidance, your provider at Ascent Pain will insert a thin needle into the epidural space and carefully administer the medication.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. You may feel pressure but not pain. After the injection, patients are monitored briefly and can return home the same day. It is generally advised to rest for the remainder of the day, although many return to normal activities within 24 hours.
Effectiveness and Duration of Relief
Epidural steroid injections do not cure the underlying condition but are highly effective at managing symptoms. Pain relief can occur within a few days, although some patients notice improvement within hours. Relief may last anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the individual and the severity of the condition.
In many cases, ESIs are used as part of a comprehensive pain management plan that may include physical therapy, medications, or additional interventional treatments.
Are Epidural Steroid Injections Safe?
Epidural steroid injections are considered safe and effective when performed by experienced pain specialists. As with any medical procedure, there are risks, but serious complications are rare. Possible side effects may include temporary increases in pain, headache, or allergic reaction. Your provider will discuss all risks and benefits before the procedure to ensure you are fully informed and comfortable.
